Prof. William Dalton, Ph.D.To safely use rosehip oil, there are key precautions to be considered. While it is generally very well tolerated, some people may experience reactions. It is always recommended to perform patch tests on the skin before regular use. People with an allergy to the rose family of plants should avoid using this oil altogether. Consulting with the appropriate professionals is always recommended in the case of any doubt.
Patch testing is important for safe introduction. Apply a small amount behind the ear or the inner arm. Reactions can be checked from 24 to 48 hours later. Only proceed if redness and itching do not appear during that time. This simple step will eliminate the possibility of irritating the entire facial area. Start slowly, even after a successful test.
Sun protection is essential when using rosehip oil. No matter how high its antioxidant level is, please do not use it instead of sunscreen. Always apply an SPF of 30 or higher over morning applications of the oil. The vitamin A content in the oil intensifies any problems encountered with photosensitivity. Combine the oil with the hats if extended outdoor periods are planned.
Allergy Risks
- Avoid if allergic to roses or related plants
- Discontinue use immediately if rash develops
- Consult allergist before trying if uncertain
Product Interactions
- Avoid mixing with retinoids initially
- Separate application from strong acids
- Wait 30 minutes between different products
Special Populations
- Pregnant women need medical consultation
- Not recommended for infants under 6 months
- Elderly skin may require reduced frequency
Product Mixing requires careful consideration. Do not combine with strong acids, glycolic, for example, at the beginning! Retinoids may dry out too much if layered. Start with new products slowly, spacing products apart by at least 30 minutes.
Stop using the product right away if you experience any side effects. Symptoms of possible side effects are: redness that lingers, itching, or swelling. If you have serious symptoms you could consult with a dermatologist. Quality is also a factor - stick with cold pressed organic oils. In order to keep the oil effective and safe, proper storage is important.
