Can lymphatic drainage cause health risks?

Prof. Benjamin Murphy, Ph.D.Lymphatic drainage techniques pose a genuine risk of fluid overload on some of your vital organs if they are not used properly or on the correct patients. The methods induce a fluid shift, causing fluid to flow through the tiny vessels directly under your skin. The other real risk is from the removal of blood clots if the therapist were to lay their hands on such a clot inadvertently.
Cardiac Conditions
- Fluid redistribution strains weakened hearts
- May trigger congestive heart failure episodes
- Requires cardiologist clearance before sessions
- Absolute contraindication for severe cases
Renal Impairment
- Compromised kidneys can't process extra fluid
- Risks electrolyte imbalance and swelling
- Strict fluid intake monitoring essential
- Avoid during acute kidney injury phases
Infection Dissemination is another severe risk. Bacteria spread rapidly throughout the body via the lymphatic system. If you drain over cellulitis or an open wound, you may introduce germs into the general circulation. I have seen patients go from bad to worse because of sepsis caused by work on the infected extremity. Strict adherence, therefore, to sterile technique and working away from a known infected area is necessary.
Consequences of fluid overload affect the function of the heart and lungs. If the session becomes too long, the tissues may become so saturated that they can no longer absorb any more fluid. It starts to pool, presenting itself as either shortness of breath or a sudden increase in weight overnight. Kidney patients risk the most, as their organs cannot process the additional load of fluid as easily. Never have a session lasting more than 45 minutes!
Obtain a medical clearance before undergoing any lymphatic technique. This is compulsory if you have a history of cancer treatment, blood-clotting issues, or medical devices implanted within your body. Certified therapists should thoroughly review your medications and health history. Never undertake without a professional thoroughly evaluating your specific risks.
