Prof. Benjamin Murphy, Ph.D.When done correctly, meditating while lying down can also be quite effective. Although it provides ease when it comes to physical difficulties, the ability to remain alert is a matter of some technique. Correct alignment can also minimize.
By placing cushions wisely under your knees and head, you will achieve spinal alignment. A slight chin tuck can help prevent strain on the neck. Keep your hands resting on your abdomen to observe your breathing patterns. These adjustments will enable sustainable comfort in your practice, particularly when you practice for extended periods.
Address sleepiness/anxiety through strategic and conscious practices. Keep your eyes open half-squinted and gaze softly downward. Meditate in the morning when your energy is most vibrant and expansive. Put cool cloths on your forehead to counter sleepiness throughout your engagement.
Optimal Conditions
- Morning sessions when alertness peaks
- Firm surfaces like yoga mats prevent slouching
- Quiet environments minimize distractions
Position Variations
- Corpse pose with palms facing upward
- Semi-reclined on sofa with feet grounded
- Side-lying with pillow between knees
Focus Techniques
- Breath counting with abdominal awareness
- Progressive muscle relaxation sequences
- Mental body scanning from toes to head
Shift between postures in longer practice sessions. Begin in an upright position, focusing on the ground, and then transition into the reclined position as needed for comfort. Transfer between positions with mindfulness, remaining aware of your breath. This method avoids stiffness and allows attention to remain steady.
Identify when lying down meditation is the most beneficial. Utilize it while recovering from a migraine or following a surgical procedure. Avoid it while the sleep pressure to go to sleep is building later in the evening. I save my reclined practice for mid-day times when I could typically be energized.
Combine reclined meditation with other techniques, alternate days with seated practice. Integrate brief standing stretches during lying sessions. This variety maintains benefits while reducing position limitations.
