Tai Chi is remarkable in that it requires little equipment or gear. You don't need anything special to practice basic principles, such as weight shifting and arm circles. All you need to begin are comfortable clothes and flat shoes. This is the type of thing that can be practiced at home with little or no expense for special equipment. Just clear a space and start.

However, avoid thick garments that restrict the circular motion of the shoulder joints. Well-designed clothes are better for movement than those that are costly.

Specialized tools address specific training issues: Balance discs challenge your balance whenever your weight shifts. They specifically strengthen the proprioception of the ankle. Mirrors prevent misalignment in spinal waves. Timers define the interval for synchronized breathing patterns. Solutions for common learning plateaus are easily resolved with these tools.

Placing a high importance on the adjustments of your practice environment is crucial for supporting equipment purchase versatility. Outdoors, a natural surface provides grounding, but it requires an even terrain; indoors, floors without slides are necessary. Wall space for mirrors is given more importance than actual space, and light preventing eye strain is essential for executing technical movements. Your environment should assist you in practicing without the need to purchase equipment.

Advance tactically and with little investment. Learn the fundamentals before introducing tools. Use the community center equipment initially. Upgrade when particular shortfalls become evident.
