Prof. Benjamin Murphy, Ph.D.Chamomile tea interacts with various medications and requires careful consideration for safe consumption. There are natural compounds in chamomile tea that can alter the way medications work in your body and may compromise their effects or increase risks. I've helped many clients steer through these interactions safely. Always err on the side of caution and honesty with your doctor about consuming herbal teas.
Blood Thinners
- Potentiates warfarin aspirin and similar anticoagulants
- Increases bleeding risk during activities or injuries
- Requires frequent INR monitoring and dose adjustments
Central Nervous System Depressants
- Amplifies drowsiness from benzodiazepines or sleep aids
- Creates dangerous sedation levels affecting coordination
- Avoid operating heavy machinery after combined use
Immunosuppressants
- Interferes with cyclosporine absorption in transplant patients
- May trigger organ rejection without proper monitoring
- Requires strict timing separation from medications
The phytoestrogen content in chamomile may affect hormonal therapies, such as with birth control (including pills, patches, injections, and IUDs), or prescription thyroid medications. The impact of phytoestrogens on drug efficacy is unpredictable. Consider discussing options with your endocrinologist. Exercise caution when consuming chamomile if you have a hormone-sensitive condition.
Establish disclosure protocols with all healthcare providers. Have an updated and thorough list of all supplements and teas you take, and disclose that list at every medical appointment. I share information about medication interactions with clients for their convenience. Proactively addressing medication interactions prevents the risk of contraindications with your medications.
For interactions that can't be avoided, establish a strategy for timing of consumption. Space out chamomile by a minimum of four hours from pharmaceutical medications. This will lessen the risk of absorption interference. It's a good idea to watch for any unusual symptoms, such as excessive bleeding or dizziness, and notify your prescribing medical doctor if they occur.
