Prof. Benjamin Murphy, Ph.D.The GABA-enhancing properties of valerian root cause dangerous interactions with many categories of substances. The concomitant use of it with central nervous system depressants such as alcohol and any of the benzodiazepines may result in significant respiratory depression. Common medications may produce dangerous reactions if not used with proper precautions.
CNS Depressant Dangers
- GABA synergy: Amplifies sedation exponentially
- Respiratory risk: Potential breathing suppression
- Emergency signs: Confusion, slow breathing, blue lips
MAO Inhibitor Hazards
- Serotonin syndrome: Agitation, fever, tremors
- Onset timeframe: Within 2-12 hours of combination
- Medical emergency: Requires immediate treatment
Surgical Precautions
- Metabolic interference: Alters drug processing
- Anesthesia depth: Unpredictable sedation levels
- Clearance protocol: 14-day pre-surgery discontinuation
MAO inhibitor interactions are hazardous. Suppose valerian is taken with antidepressants, such as phenelzine. In that case, it can cause serotonin syndrome - a potentially deadly condition characterized by high fever and seizures. Symptoms can emerge quickly, within hours of administration, and require emergency medical care.
For surgical preparation, stop valerian exactly two weeks before the procedure. The active compounds will alter the metabolism and clearance of anesthetic drugs. I have terrible stories about the most recent usage of valerian, complicating the dosing and timing of recovery onset from anesthesia.
Make sure always to disclose valerian use to healthcare providers, including dentists and specialists. Many medications have hidden depressants or can indirectly interact with one another. Therefore, providing a current list of all medications, including supplements or drugs, for your healthcare provider to review is always a good idea.
If an accidental combination occurs, watch for warning signs such as significant drowsiness or a change in breathing. You should get medical attention faster rather than waiting it out. You can help emergency responders by bringing the valerian product label, so they can quickly assess potential interactions.
