What body areas should I avoid during self massage?

Prof. Benjamin Murphy, Ph.D.Knowing where not to massage is vital to avoid serious injury in self-treatment. Caution must be observed with the spinal vertebrae since too much pressure can result in injury to the nerves. If pressure is applied to the front of the neck, damage can be caused to arteries that travel close to the surface. If tissue is bruised or inflamed, great caution should be exercised, and complete rest should be given until it has healed completely. I teach my clients about safe zones and how to utilize them.
Spinal Column
- Avoid direct pressure on vertebrae
- Work beside spine targeting paraspinal muscles
- Use tennis balls at 45-degree angles
- Limit pressure to light-medium intensity
Front Neck
- Never apply pressure to throat area
- Focus on trapezius muscles behind ears
- Use fingertips for gentle upward strokes
- Keep head supported during techniques
Injured Tissues
- Skip bruised or swollen areas
- Work around inflammation sites
- Apply ice instead of pressure
- Resume massage after full healing
Bony prominences, such as the knees and elbows, require special care. Apply pressure around joints, rather than directly onto joints. The kneecap contains structures that are sensitive to pressure and susceptible to damage from compression. Therefore, I recommend working on the muscles of the thigh above the joint and the calf muscle below the joint.
The rib areas must be carefully treated. Don't press on the ribs, as they may fracture under pressure. Use light strokes of the fingers upon the intercostals between the ribs. Avoid applying deep pressure to the lower ribs, as there are no bones to protect the organs in this area.
Koga's Body Awareness saves you from critical errors. If you notice nerve pain or numbness, stop immediately. Any unusual bruising is also a sign of danger. A very good indicator that I like to use is the palm test: if you would not apply any pressure with your palm, do not use pressure in that area. If you are not sure, do not touch it at all.
