Being aware of common mistakes made in meditation will help you considerably enhance the quality of your practice. There are some things to avoid because they'll lead to frustration and stall your development. In fact, these errors often trip up novices. Still, they can be more easily avoided once you are aware of them and adjust your approach.

Refuse to let frustration creep in when your mind wanders during sessions. Mental drifting is unavoidable as your brain processes the day. What to do instead is note the thoughts, unclad them like clouds rolling past, and gently refocus your attention. This non-judgmental redirection can lead to increased mental resilience over time.

Let go of expectations for instant change or realization. The benefits of meditation build up gradually, much like physical fitness. The aim is to remain committed and consistent, rather than achieving miraculous results. The process of learning to be patient is more beneficial than emphasizing immediate needs.

Do not tolerate physical discomfort. Whenever you experience numbness or pain, immediately exit the position. This may require cushions under the knees or back supports. I change the position of my body weekly in accordance with the messages my body gives me to avoid being hurt and to maintain continuity of practice.
