Prof. Benjamin Murphy, Ph.D.Self-administered hand reflexology is easy to do if it is learned and practiced carefully. Most areas of the palm can be treated with the thumb, and those areas for which precision treatment is important, such as those of the fingertips, can be treated with the index finger. I have taught hundreds of people how to treat themselves safely and effectively. In every case, the treatment has been administered by the individual themselves. In every case, it has been essential to have clean hands and wrist protection to avoid strain.
Hand Preparation
- Wash hands thoroughly with warm soapy water
- Apply light oil if skin feels dry
- Remove rings and bracelets before starting
Body Positioning
- Sit comfortably with both feet flat
- Rest wrists on folded towel for support
- Maintain upright posture to facilitate breathing
Session Guidelines
- Limit initial sessions to 5 minutes per hand
- Gradually increase to 10 minutes after two weeks
- Always stop before fatigue sets in
Pressure techniques change per area: palms apply pads of thumbs rotating, index finger tips for boney spots e.g. knuckles. Firm pressure applied giving warmth but not pain. I suggest non-dominant practised first on self. Mirroring pressure movement with non-dominant hand in any changeover.
Recognize parameters of safety and cease immediately if tingling or numbness arises. Limit trainings when abrasions, inflammation, or unprovident swelling exists. I recommend avoiding the LI4 point during pregnancy. Journal sensations in a study diary so the course can continue safely.
Professional advice continues to be important for difficult challenges: certified reflexologists will identify subtle energy blockages that you may not have detected yet. They also tailor techniques for variations in anatomy of the hand. Consider booking one or more of their sessions if you find limited outcomes from your self-care and practice consistently.
