You absolutely need headphones for binaural beats relaxation to work effectively. This is a fundamental aspect of how the technology operates. Binaural beats require separate audio channels supplying different frequencies to each ear. The brain then hears the frequency difference in them. A proper headphone setup is important as it materially affects the results. For sufficiently good frequency separation, it is necessary to have a perfect seal against the ears or in the ears.
